I got to go to Brooklyn NY last weekend and see one of my all time favorite bands, Mission of Burma. They played at a really nice venue called the Bell House and performed some of my favorite tracks, such as Trem Two (I’ve included this track below). They also let me take a picture with them! So if you get a chance go see this great band, you won’t regret it. I’ve included some pictures below.

These guys are TOURING, and they played last thursday at the Vic in Chicago. Here’s a quote from Miles Raymour I pulled off of The Chicago Reader. (I couldn’t Summarize Lou Barlow any better, even though I do love the Smiths.)
Morrissey may be popularly perceived as the King of Sadness Feelings, but his arch melodrama has always struck me as too closely related to handful-of-Tylenol “suicide attempt” drama queen-ism, which is just another way for somebody to say “Look at me!” Serious aficionados of feeling bad know that Lou Barlow is the true master of alt-rock miserablism. His 90s discography covers all the main flavors of depression, from the heartbroken “I could break down crying at any time” prettiness of Sebadoh’s “Soul and Fire” to the abject “I haven’t left the house or showered in a week” desolation of Sentridoh’s “Choke Chain,” and his frequent detours into hardcore bong-rip punk are a fair stand-in for manic jags. (Let’s not talk about the Folk Implosion.) On his new solo album, Goodnight Unknown (Merge), he sounds more settled and less self-tortured, more expansive and less dependent on minor keys—but he can still write a tuneful, melancholy pop song, and the hushed “I’m Thinking . . . ” is as dark as anything he’s done.

My first post today is talking about the art of a mixed tape. This is my favorite gift to get from my friends. First, I don’t have to secretly peruse their music collection to figure out what I need to get them for Christmas. Second, it’s interesting to hear what they think I will enjoy. So, since I love receiving a perfect mixed tape, my favorite gift to give is a mixed tape.
Recently I made a “mixed tape” for a friend’s birthday. When I was a kid, making a mixed tape was difficult, but now a mixed tape is really a cd that can easily be made on itunes or some other sort of program. The “old” mixed tapes had to be made from records (which I would grab from my parents collection), CDs (which I could never afford), or if you were really poor like me, you had to catch your favorite songs on the radio and hit record. However, times have changed itunes has come into my life along with a small income. I can spend all my free money on cds, mp3’s and records, and make many mixed CDs for all of my friends if they want one or not.
