The Valentine’s Day Show

February 9, 2009

This is my favorite show all year. I play songs about love, hate, breaking-up, and female/male angst. If you want to call and make some requests for your favorite sappy or angry love songs, Wednesday from 8 to 10pm at KRUI 89.7 is the time to do it.

I’ve included a shameless self promotion of a painting I did a long time ago about a relationship gone wrong. It’s my artistic contribution to Valentine’s Day:

A Natural Caffeinated Sound

January 26, 2009

The goal for my show this week is to play some punk from the late 70s and early 80s, and some other more recent rockers that were influenced. Hopefully this show will rock hard, because lately I need something to wake me up. Coffee, sugar, and the freezing Iowa winter is just not doing it for me, so maybe some Minor Threat, Husker Du, The Boomtown Rats, Iggy Pop, and the Stooges will. Here’s some of the set below, but if you want to hear it listen in this Wednesday from 8 to 10pm. We also have an online stream at http://www.kruiradio.org/listen/. I’ll be playing more than what’s listed below.

1. The Dead Boys, Sonic Reducer
2. Minor Threat, Salad Days
3. Gang of Four, It’s her Factory
4. The Stooges, Down on the Street
5. Pixies, Subbacultcha
6. The Weirdos, We got the Neutron Bomb
7. The Avengers, We are the One
8. Iggy Pop, Shake Appeal
9. Misfits, Mommy can I go out and kill tonight?
10. The Boomtown Rats, Lookin’ After No. 1
11. Talking Heads, Slippery People
12. The Jam, In the City
13. Siouxsie & the Banshees, Spellbound
14. X, nausea
15. Elvis Costello & The Attractions, King Horse
16. The Rolling Stones, Shake your Hips
17. The Evens, Dinner with the President
18. Joy Division, Heart and Soul
19. Husker Du, Could you be the one?
20. The Replacements, Seen your Video
21. The Dream Syndicate, Definitely Clean
22. The Germs, Circle One
23. Lyres, How do you Know?
24. Soul Asylum, Chains
25. The Murder City Devils, Bear Away
26. Richard Hell & The Voidoids, Blank Generation
27. Blondie, Hanging on the Telephone
28. The Ramones, I Don’t Wanna Walk Around With You
29. Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers, Born to Lose
30. Adolescents, No Way

As a side note, Soul Asylum, track 24, created one of the best album covers EVER for the album Clam Dip & other Delights, which Chains is on. It’s a parody of the classic Whipped Cream & Other Delights album cover from Herb Alpert’s Tijuana Brass, aka TJB, (which I remember listening to out of my dad’s collection when I was a kid). This is one of those albums that is just beautiful from start to finish. I have to say that TJB’s cover is way sexier than the dude sitting in clam dip, but maybe not as funny. I’ve included both album covers below. Enjoy.
